Lesotho Sport and Recreation Commission (LSRA) will launch 10km race at Mokhotlong on October 27, 2018.
This was revealed in a press conference hosted by LSRC at its offices on Monday.
The newly introduce race will be an additional to the three races which take place at Mokhotlong in every year during Lesotho High Altitude Summer Marathon in December.
According to LSRC public relations officer Mr Refiloe Maphallela, there is a big gab because presently only 5km, 21.1km and 42.2km are in place.
He said 10km race is mostly admired by the international athletes.
Maphallela showed that all people are invited to participate in the launch of the race.
The coordinator of Lesotho High Altitude Summer Marathon Mr Teboho Malataliana said there are many changes in this year’s marathon.
He said prize money will be increased as opposed to last year. He showed that they have partners and sponsors who are on board. Therefore they will collaborate in order to develop athletics in the country.
Mataliana highlighted to the journalists that the aim of marathon is to encourage tourism in the country.
He explained that this year they have included the department of culture in Mokhotlong as one of their partners.
As a result on November 30, 2018 they will host Miss Culture competition at Mapholaneng.
He concluded by saying that others join the race for fun and to know Lesotho, which means not everyone compete. Therefore, people should come in numbers to enjoy at Mokhotlong.
One of the organizing members of the marathon and the LAAA public relations officer Mr Sejanamane Maphathe revealed that the prize for the winner of 42.2km race is M120, 000 this year.
The winner of 5km will grab M5, 000, while 10km champion snatches M12. 000, and 21.1km will go away with M20, 000.
He said top 10 runners in each category will get prizes, depending to their different positions.
Maphathe explained that this year there would be changes regarding the preparations of the race. People will be expected to source transport, meal and accommodation for themselves.
He clarified that late registration for runners would be penalized. They should be prepared to pay more than the normal charges as control measure.
