lThe Lesotho National Olympic Committee (LNOC) through its programmes; Lepereng Olympafrica Centre (LOC) and Olympafrica Youth Ambassador Programme (OYAP), will host a soccer tournament for adolescent girls and boys aged between 12-15 years.
The event will take place on January 18, 2019 at the LOC facilities. The event is named after the organization called Supporting The Future (STF) based in the United States (US) which is the leading partner.
The purpose of this tournament according to press statement issued by the coordinator Mr Khotso Mahloko is to promote football among teenage boys and girls while simultaneously equipping them with life skills.
It therefore, targeted every young individual regardless of their sporting abilities. The targeted group has been made up of eight teams from different primary schools within the vicinity of the Centre.
The plan is to have the teams form two groups and play in a round robin format with the top teams going to the finals.
The STF has a vision of running this cup annually depending on the success of the current pilot. This project also resonates with the LNOC strategic objective 2.3.1; which addresses the development of the socio- environmental responsibility & programmes engaging sports in community building & overcoming environmental hazards.
“If the value of sport as a behavioural change and empowerment tool is recognized in Lesotho, the LNOC believes that children especially girls stand to develop self-esteem and confidence. Henceforth, they have an opportunity to develop abilities to overcome social plaques they encounter in their daily lives”, concluded Mahloko.
